CALUMET SUFFERS TERRIERS BITE
BY GLEN MILLER
Edition:Wednesday, April 14, 2010

CALUMET – A strong south wind made for a hitter's day and Thomas took advantage of it as the Terriers handed Calumet High School's baseball team a doubleheader loss.
Thomas took the opening game by a 21-1 margin, and then backed it up with a 14-0 victory in game two. Both outings were called after three innings.
“Thomas has got a good ball team,” Calumet head coach Matt Haley said. “They have some guys that can hit the ball hard. We played better defense in the field, but the few errors we had and the walks mounted up.”
Calumet pitchers struggled with the gusting wind, walking 12 batters, hitting five and issuing 12 hits over the two games.
Thomas scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning of game one, then added five in the second and four in the third. The Terriers had three home runs and four doubles.
Marcos Baros took the loss, scattering 20 runs, seven hits, five walks and three hit batsmen over two and a third innings. Darion Dobbins gave up a solo home run before striking out two of the three batters faced.
Calumet scored its lone run in the second inning as Dylan Gilbert hit a leadoff home run. Adrian Stokes added a single in the inning but was picked off.
Gilbert took the mound for game two, allowing 14 runs off four hits and seven walks. He did fan seven batters but hit two.
“He had some control issues,” Haley said. “He had seven strikeouts, which was nice, but the wind was affecting him. He had not pitched in a week and he was a little rusty.
Tyler Spoon went 2-for-2 from the plate in the losing effort, while Gilbert was 1-for-2. Spoon was the only runner to reach second base, advancing in the third inning on a Kirby Woolard walk.
“They had some pitchers with good off-speed stuff,” Haley said. “When we see good pitching, we have timing issues that cause us some problems.”
