UNION CITY 3-0 ON YOUNG SEASON
BY GLEN MILLER
Edition:Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Union City High School's baseball team moved to 3-0 on the spring season with a weekend road sweep of Geary and Oklahoma Christian Academy.
The Tigers defeated the Bison 20-9 in six innings, before capping off the doubleheader with a 16-1 run-rule of the Eagles.
“I was glad we came home today with two wins,” Union City head coach Ludy Griggs said. “We took advantage of 29 walks and five hit batters. We were pretty relaxed in the box and are having good pitch selection early in the season.”
Union City led Geary 9-1 in the top of the third before the Bison rallied for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers gave up a run in the bottom of the fifth before exploding for 11 runs of their own in the top of the sixth.
“Kolton Brown came in and had to shut the door for us (fifth) after we blew a big lead late. He got us to the extra frame tied, where we then put up 11. We wasted a perfectly good win for Brandon Roberts,” Griggs said.
Brown threw two innings for the win, allowing a run off a hit, walk and four strikeouts. Roberts started the game, scattering eight runs (four earned), three hits and eight walks over three innings. He fanned six batters. Donald Duffey walked one and struck out three in one inning of work.
Anthony Fanzo went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Brown doubled for one of his two hits and three runs driven in. Mike Wall had a two-run single and Logan Gillock drew four walks.
Brown got the win over OCA, allowing one earned run off four hits and three walks over four innings. He fanned seven.
Roberts was 1-for-3, while Gillock doubled, tripled and plated three runs. Union City scored three runs in the first, six in both the second and fourth frames and one in the third.
“I was not expecting to put up so many runs early,” Griggs said. “We had a great eye at the plate.”
Union City opened the season with an 18-8 win over Western Heights' junior varsity squad.
Roberts went 2-for-3 with a ribbie, while Colton Armstrong had two singles, a double and two RBIs. Brown was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four runs driven in, while Duffey went yard along with a single and homer by Robert Red. Garrett Lessman added a single.
Fanzo got the win, allowing a hit, two walks and posting seven Ks over four innings. Brown retired three batters and issued a hit in one inning of work. Roberts was tagged for eight runs off three hits and a trio of walks, while fanning three.
