CALUMET BOYS WRAP UP SUMMER SEASON
GARRETT EATON
Edition:Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Calumet High School's boys basketball team wrapped up its summer schedule with a trip to the Frontier Basketball Camp.
Calumet went 4-4 over the three-day stay in Red Rock, winning games against Varnum, Merritt and Stuart. The Chieftains got a measure of revenge against Arnett, a team that beat CHS last year at the Canton Tournament, on a Forrest Higdon buzzer-beater.
“We were shorthanded, missing one starter and one of our top bench guys,” said Calumet head coach Matt Haley.
“Players stepped up and realized what their roles might be on a given night. They are going to have to be able to contribute on both ends for us to be successful. Forrest's performance at camp is a culmination of his improvement this summer, he easily averaged 20 points a game this week.”
Haley was also pleased with other younger players.
“Oran Laub is becoming more polished, and Tyler Spoon slipped into a starting role this week and did a good job. Marshall Reeder continues to always be solid and had a couple of big games. Konnor Woolard is back on the team after sitting out a year, and is going to bring a lot of energy and play a lot for us when he learns the system.
“We didn't win at Newcastle to start the summer, but you could already see a major improvement in the way we played the game. We started beating some people, and when it matters next season we will be able to compete every night. We learned how to handle different tough situations and that is what the summer is all about.”
