CALUMET PLAYS TOUGH FOES

WEATHERFORD - Although the rest of the event would not be completed due to weather, Calumet High School''s softball team would get the chance to play some stiff competition in the Best of the West Classic.
In their first game, Calumet played Sterling, ranked fifth in Class 2A. Calumet led 7-1, but after Sterling scored eight runs off five Calumet errors in the fifth inning, SHS would topple the Chieftains by a 15-12 score.
“We played really well besides that one inning,” said coach Tyler Snowden. “We were patient at the plate and took a lot of walks, but there were other times where we should have swung and we didn't.”
Calumet would then be matched up with Class 4A's Anadarko. The Warriors picked up a 9-5 win, as Emily Eaton went 3-for-4 and Katelyn Richardson went 3-for-3.
“We had too many errors,” said Snowden. “It was a lack of focus all around.”
In order to avoid elimination, Calumet would have to play Heritage Hall, a game in which the Chieftains won by a score of 9-0. Micah Snyder went 2-for-4 with a home run, while Eaton was 3-for-4 with a double.
Desiree Beard was 2-for-4 with a double, while Mariah Miles and Richardson were each 2-for-4.
“We only had two errors, we were much more aggressive defensively, and everyone hit the ball hard at least once,” said Snowden.
“I thought Mariah pitched very well in this game, she had a lot of touch on the ball and threw consistent strikes.”
