CALUMET SPIKERS EXIT PLAYOFFS
BY GLEN MILLER
Edition:Sunday, October 11, 2009

After making the state tournament last season in basketball, Calumet High School's volleyball squad tried to make it to the top in two sports.
Playing in the recent 4A regional in Cache, the Chieftains would take on Fletcher, winning by scores of 25-15/25-17/25-13. Jordan Tech had 10 kills for Calumet, while senior Lindsey Weldon added 14 assists.
With the field of teams cut in half from eight to four, the Chieftains then took on Snyder in the semifinal matchup, with the winner playing Cache for the regional title and a berth in the state tourney.
Snyder won the first game 25-23, before winning the second 25-18. Calumet made a last-ditch effort to come back, winning the third game 25-14 before dropping the fourth game 26-24.
Tech notched 11 kills, a dozen digs and two blocks, while Emily Eaton added 11 assists. Weldon added 13 digs, while Mariah Miles had 12. Katelyn Richardson added 11 digs and a pair of blocks. "We just lost focus," said coach Tyler Snowden. "We made mistakes that we have made all year. It was a big improvement over last year, but we just didn''t play at the high level that we''re capable of."
Calumet finished the year with a record of 19-5 and ranked 10th in Class 4A.
