ER board meeting within law

By Rex Hogan/Staff writer

El Reno School Superintendent Ranet Tippens said she has two opinions from lawyers who say the El Reno School Board can legally discuss the open school board seat in private session.

On July 14, the school board listed the vacant school board office 5 seat as a topic for discussion during an executive session.

Public bodies traditionally are allowed only to discuss personnel matters or legal problems in private meetings.

Area youth get taste of police work

By Daniel Lapham/Staff writer

Eleven El Reno youth are spending the week training as police cadets in the El Reno Junior Police Academy.

The program began on Monday and will continue through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The academy offers youth, grades 6 to 12, an opportunity to get an inside look at how police officers train, and what it takes to be one of El Reno’s finest, said Officer Bobby Owens, who is heading this year’s program.

“Our goal with the academy is to bring leadership and team-building skills to all of the youth involved,” he said.
