Indian baseball team exits in thriller

By Byron Beers/Staff Writer CHICKASHA — A two-run lead in the seventh inning wasn’t enough for El Reno Friday afternoon against Chickasha during a Class 5A West Region II matchup. The Indians took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Fightin’ Chicks started their elimination process in a must-win game for the Tribe. Kyle Hernandez tied the contest with a two-out RBI single to right field that El Reno junior right fielder Justin Ferguson couldn’t come up with on a diving attempt. Prior to Hernandez’s hit, Darren Green also singled off El Reno starting pitcher Joe Halley with two outs with a base hit to center that brought the Chicks to within one run. Kyle King delivered with the game-winning hit in the eighth off Halley with a walk-off double to the centerfield wall that scored courtesy runner Michael McCracken from second base to give the Chicks a 4-3 win and advanced them to the 5A state tournament. The Indians, which close the season at 14-19 overall under first-year head coach Jason Looper, played near-perfect baseball for six innings. Halley pitched all eight innings without a day’s rest. The senior right-hander worked in five innings in an elimination game against Altus on Thursday afternoon where he helped guide El Reno to a 2-1 victory and set the stage for Friday. Halley, who had just worked his way back into the lineup in the regular season finale at home against Western Heights earlier last week after sustaining a knee injury in the prior weeks, didn’t show any signs of fatigue or wear-and-tear against Chickasha. Halley allowed just one earned run through the first six innings and got solid defensive play behind him.
