OKC sweeps Indians in baseball

Offensive woes continued on for two more games Monday evening for El Reno in summer league action.

The Indians, still trying to find the right mix with three key departures in the heart of the lineup, combined for just six hits in their two losses to Oklahoma City at Hub Reed Complex.

Hunter Epperson and Jarrod Cole accounted for the only two hits in the opening contest, which the Indians lost 5-1. Daulton Repp had three of El Reno’s four hits in the nightcap, a 12-4 setback.

The only run in the opener came with two outs during the seventh inning when Cole doubled to center field and drove in Glenn Wedman. Epperson led off the home-half of the first with a two-bagger down the right field line.

“We just struggled against the curveball,” El Reno head coach Jason Looper said. “We swung at too many balls in the dirt and he (Alexander McAfee) took us out of our gameplan and kept us off balance.”

“We’re really struggling offensively with the core of our offensive gone,” Looper added. “It will take us some time to fill those shoes and get it going. We need to learn to put the ball in play.”

McAfee was sharp for the full seven innings for the Broncos. The righthander registered 12 strikeouts and issued three walks.

Oklahoma City did most of its damage with the bats during the opening frame off Indians’ starter Caleb Koos.

The Broncos scored three runs on three hits. Caden Cleveland knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Cole Cleveland followed with an RBI single to left.

The Broncos added their other two runs in the third and fourth innings, both coming on throwing errors.

Koos settled in after a rough start in the first. In six innings or work, he finished with six strikeouts and walked two. Koos gave up a total of five hits, only two coming after the first.

In the nightcap, the Indians scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning.

Epperson, Cole and Michael Costin each walked to start the inning, before Koos delivered a two-run double down the right-field line. Cole later scored on a wild pitch, and Tyler Palmer knocked in Koos with an RBI groundout to shortstop.
