Indians fall in OT to ranked OKC DouglasBy Glen Miller/Staff Writer ANADARKO — Three points stood in the way of El Reno High School’s boys basketball team and the Indians biggest upset of the year Friday night during the semifinals of the 2008 Warrior Classic. El Reno, ranked 12th in Class 5A, took Class 4A’s fourth-ranked Douglass into overtime before suffering a 67-64 defeat after being held to only four points in the extra period. The Indians got two free throws from Chris Billbury and a basket by Taylor Wedman, but gave up seven points on defense to the Trojans. El Reno forced the overtime period with some last-second heroics as junior Fayzon Richey took a pass in the lane from Jordan Webb and hit a rim-rolling shot that dropping in with seven tenths of a second on the clock – pulling EHS to within one at 60-59. Richey, who was fouled on the play, netted the ensuing free throw. Billbury then intercepted a long inbounds pass from the Trojans to send the game into overtime tied at 60-all. El Reno trailed most of the game, falling behind 20-12 after one period, before closing the gap to 29-28 at the half with a 16-9 scoring edge in the second period. Douglass held a 14-13 scoring edge in the third period to lead by two at 43-41. El Reno went on a 19-17 scoring run in the final period. Billbury ended the game with a team-leading 21 points for the Indians, Followed by Wedman with 19 points. Richey led those in single digits with nine points, including a 7-for-7 effort from the free throw line. Webb and Thad Palmer each added six to the EHS scoring mix and Jared Krittenbrink had a 3-pointer. |
