Tribe basketball boys split road series
By Byron Beers/Staff Writer
El Reno found a better ending Friday night and recovered from a slow start against Noble on the road.
The Indians received a team-high 14 points from Glenn Wedman and 11 from Taylor Wedman and handed the Bears a 52-45 setback.
It was the second win in three games for El Reno, which improved to 5-13 overall and 2-10 in the Suburban Conference. The Indians bounced back from a 55-40 loss at Harrah on Thursday. They started the week with a 39-38 win over Deer Creek in the closing seconds.
Head coach Rodney Haydon found out Wednesday where his team will begin postseason play. El Reno will open Class 5A regional play at Guthrie against the Bluejays on Friday, Feb. 23.
The Indians started Friday’s contest in a drought, but fortunately for Haydon’s squad it came at just the right time.
Noble scored the game’s first nine points and the Indians couldn’t find any offensive production against the Bears’ 3-2 zone.
But the Tribe recovered before the close of the opening period and found offensive life. They trimmed the Noble lead to three points heading into the second.
“We just didn’t attack the zone very well,” Haydon said. “But we were able to make a good run at the end of the first to get back into the game.”
The Bears took a three-point lead into halftime, thanks to a half-court shot at the buzzer.
El Reno would respond by outscoring Noble 35-25 over the final two quarters.
Included was perhaps the Indians best single period of offense on the season. They scored 24 points in the final eight minutes.
“We just made some adjustments in the fourth,” Haydon said. “We moved without the ball better and were just more efficient. We got balanced scoring from both our guards and post players.”
“It was good to come back the way we did, especially with the way we started,” Haydon added. “The biggest key in this game was our balanced scoring. We knocked down outside jumpers and scored inside.”
