Lumberjack tour takes it toll on El Reno linksters in Midwest City event

By Byron Beers/Staff Writer Perhaps facing its toughest challenge thus far on the season, the El Reno boys golf team shot 342 last Monday in its only action of the week at the Midwest City Invitational. The Indians placed 12th out of 20 schools at John Conrad Golf Course, but was second out of Suburban Conference teams competing, trailing only Carl Albert’s final score of 332. Putnam City was the tournament champion with a 311. Edmond North followed one stroke behind in second place, and Norman North ended in third with a 317. Shawnee and Guthrie, both conference opponents, placed behind the Indians. “We made a lot of mistakes and the grass out there isn’t very good right now,” said El Reno head coach Ken Posey. “There are a lot of trees out there and the guys got into them quite a bit. “We didn’t play as well as what we did in Weatherford where it is a much more wide-open course.” El Reno placed fifth with a 322 on the par-71 Prairie West Golf Club in Weatherford during their last tournament. It’s the Indians' best team score so far on the season. “I think what we’re doing right now is we are playing too tight and not relaxed,” Posey said. “We do fine and seem relaxed when on the driving range, but when we get into competition on the course, we tighten up. “We need to bring our scores down and just keep working hard. This was a very tough golf course that you play only once all season.” Senior Alex Weaver again led the Indians with the top individual performance, shooting a 42-39-81 that put him 9-over-par. Freshman Cameron Ross was four shots behind Weaver with an 85, Jeremy Foreman followed with an 88, senior Brian Gatz shot an 89 and Jake Schwarz finished with a 92. El Reno will be back in action Monday when they play at Territory Golf and Country Club at the Duncan Invitational. “Right now we just need more consistency with our swings and confidence,” Posey said. “I feel like we can make a good run at conference."
