Nominees sought for Burger Day kingIt’s selection time for King of the Big Burger as the 19th annual Burger Day Festival approaches on May 5. Nominations are being accepted at the Main Street office, said Codie Lee-Finnigan, Main Street director. The individual who wins the distinction will be crowned at a special ceremony during the grilling of the big burger. The festival revolves around the world’s largest fried onion hamburger, weighing over 750 pounds and 8 1/2 feet in diameter. The selection of festival royalty is not exclusive to men. In 2005, El Reno City Councilwoman Debbie Harrison, a former Main Street director, was chosen as Queen of the Big Burger. Last year’s king was local businessman Craig Huber, who has operated the Main Street burger tent as a volunteer for many years. Past burger kings include the late Henry Jo VonTungeln and several former owners of onion burger cafes in El Reno. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the success of the festival, Lee-Finnigan said. Nominations must include the name of the person making the nomination, the nominee, their address and phone number and a brief narrative of why the nominee is worthy of being burger royalty. Nominations should be mailed to El Reno Main Street, P.O. Box 606, El Reno, Okla. 73036. The deadline for nominations is April 6. Main Street is also taking reservations for booth space or sponsorship opportunities for this year’s Burger Day. For information, contact Main Street at 262-8888. |
