The Calumet softball team has started to make some noise this season. The 2-0 Chieftains moved up 17 spots in the rankings this week, up from 34th in the preseason rankings to 17th.

Calumet played its home opener Friday night as they took on the Dover Longhorns.

Calumet would only need four innings of play to defeat Dover by a score of 8-0. Freshman Aspyn Davis was 3-for-3 in the game with a double and two runs scored. Ashley Haydon was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Pebbles Island was also 1-for-3 with a double.

Megan Snyder had a double and scored a run on a 1-for-2 night. Hannah Weldon was 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Emily Eaton was also 1-for-2. Meghan Renbarger went a perfect 2-for-2 in the game, scoring a run.

Lindsey Weldon became the second Chieftains (and second Weldon) to hit a home run this season, as she blasted one in the third inning. Mariah Miles was 1-for-2 with a three-bagger in the game, scoring a run. Hannah Weldon was strong from the circle, only allowing two hits to the opposing Longhorn batters.

“We’ve proven this first week that defensively we’re pretty sound, and offensively we’re getting there,” said coach Nancy Bradley. “We’re looking forward to playing some teams that will test us to see how good we really are.”

Calumet will have its first test of the young season as it takes on a very good Corn Bible squad on Monday.
