Calumet opens basketball playoffs with blowout
By Byron Beers/Staff Writer
CALUMET — The only thing that ever seemed in question for Calumet was how many points it would score in its Area II, District 2 playoff opener against Washita Heights Friday night.
Washita Heights couldn’t handle the Chieftains full-court pressure defense and didn’t have an answer for first-year head coach Dewayne Bradley’s high-octane offense.
The Class B seventh-ranked Chieftains had two players finish in double figures and a total of 11 players crack the scoring column in a convincing 87-41 victory.
The win placed Calumet (20-4) in Saturday’s district championship game against Arapaho, which defeated Canute 57-47 in Friday’s opener.
Junior guard Ethan Davis led the Chieftains’ multi-dimensional offensive attack with 19 points. Senior Neal Kennedy followed with 11.
Davis entered Friday’s contest coming off a career-high 31 points against Lookeba-Sickles in Calumet’s final regular season game.
Mike Orr and Ryan Hunter set the stage for what was to come and lifted the Chieftains to a fast start. Orr started with a quick 3-pointer from the left corner, before Hunter followed with back-to-back baskets from the inside.
Brent Vandiver and Davis finished the first period in the same fashion that Orr and Hunter started it. Vandiver scored in close and Davis added three straight points on a pull-up jumper and free throw to give Calumet a 20-10 lead going into the second.
Washita Heights began the second with a flurry that gave it hope by going on a 8-2 run, but Davis responded with a pair of 3-pointers and Vandiver scored in the middle to give the Chieftains a 30-20 lead.
Calumet ended the first half with a 15-0 run, which ultimately put the Chiefs away for good. The Chieftains turned up the defensive pressure and forced a handful of turnovers during that stretch as they built a 45-22 cushion at halftime.
Kennedy led the way with five points, all coming from the free-throw line, over the final three minutes of the half.
