El Reno City Manager Tony Rivera says there’s no reason to move quickly to fill the soon-to-be-vacant city police chief’s job.

“It’s too important a position to hurry,” he said. “I’m going to take my time.”

Police Chief Fred Savage resigned Dec. 19 after 5 1/2 years of service, citing “personal reasons” and a desire to work in the private sector. He is using his personal leave from the department, and his resignation is effective Jan. 11.

Police Capt. Ken Brown has been appointed acting chief.

“This is going to take a lot of time and attention. I’ve got an acting chief with a lot of experience. He will be the interim chief until I find a permanent police chief,” Rivera said.

He said he will advertise the position in newspapers and with the Oklahoma Municipal League.
