On the trail: Cattle drive once again brings Chisholm Trail to lifeHistory made its way across Canadian County last weekend as the Oklahoma Centennial Chisholm Trail Drive came through on its way to Kansas. The group of 30 cowpokes and about 450 head of longhorn cattle crossed state Highway 66 late Friday afternoon and settled down to camp out on the grounds of Fort Reno for two nights. They drove the cattle across fort grounds Sunday in preparation to leave for Okarche on Monday morning. The drive started Sept. 10 in Fleetwood, Texas, and will end Oct. 5 in Caldwell, Kan. It is retracing the original trail that saw more than 4 million head of cattle from 1867 to 1881. For more information and a list of stops, go to http://www.cattledrive2007.com. |
