El Reno High School’s football team will have to wait awhile to find out who its football coach will be this season.

The El Reno Board of Education met in executive session for about three and a half hours Monday, most of which was spent behind closed doors interviewing three candidates for the high school head football coach’s job.

When the four board members emerged from the meeting, they announced they had “tabled” a decision on the coaching position.

Board president Bob Lee was not at the meeting.

The three candidates, who were picked from a list of 12 resumes submitted to the athletic director, are former El Reno and current Enid football coach Tom Cobble; former Broken Arrow assistant coach and Mustang native Stephen “Bubba” Burcham; and current El Reno assistant athletic director Pat Liticker.

The three candidates left the board meeting before the board announced it had not picked a coach.

delay in hiring football coach

I hope the El reno school board has a very good reason to delay the hiring of the EHS Head Football coach. With Tom Cobble as an applicant, there should be no question as to his hiring. Coach Cobble is a veteran and proven winner. Why should there even be a delay in hiring him. Hire him now. Additionally, give him the opportunity to bring in the coaches and/or coordinators he wishes to bring with him. Hiring a head coach and then tying his hands as to hiring assistants, is a mistake, if the board has any intention of re-building the EHS Football program.
