El Reno City Council voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Kent E. Carder as Ward 1 Council member during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Vice Mayor Julie Rozsypal was elected to the seat three years ago. Citing personal reasons, she announced last month that she was going to resign. Carder will serve out the remainder of her term, which expires in November.

After her announcement, the Council opened the seat to residents, giving them the opportunity to apply for it. Carder, Jerry Robertson and Jerry Nelson applied and interviewed with the Council.

“I just want to first say that we had three outstanding candidates apply for this position,” said Mayor Matt White.

He then asked each Council member to state the name of the candidate they wanted to fill the position. Each commented on how much they appreciated all three candidates. All then named Carder as their choice.

A lifelong El Reno resident, Carder thanked the Council and said he is ready to start. He has served on a number of municipal boards, commissions and trusts and now serves on the Airpark Authority.

Carder will take over at the June 3 City Council meeting.
