El Reno High School’s girls basketball team notched another win on its victory belt against Shawnee, but the game was as close as it gets.

The Indians won 36-35, but had to withstand a furious Wolves fourth-quarter run, in which they outscored El Reno 17-9, and had to watch as a Shawnee shooter missed what could have been the winning shot with less than five seconds remaining on the game clock.

It was a see-saw game. The seventh-rated 5A Indians also had a huge run of their own. They were behind at the half 16-13.
The EHS girls then put together one of the strongest quarters of the season. They scored 14 third-quarter points, while holding the 19th-rated Wolves to only two.

Coach Eric Carr said although his team held together for the victory, there were too many “mental mistakes” during the last period that could have reversed the game’s outcome.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well and we turned it over a bunch of times. That let them back in it. We never lost the lead, but it was tight,” he said.

Carr said he was particularly unhappy with his team’s play during the last few seconds of the game.
