Lucky No. 7: El Reno girls earn seventh straight trip to state

By Glen Miller/Staff Writer El Reno High School’s girls golf team may have hit their lucky number last week as the Indians qualified for their seventh straight trip to the Class 5A state championships. Facing a steady wind throughout the 5A West Regional Championship at Windy Trails Golf Course in Altus, El Reno took third place to secure one of the six team tickets to state. “Windy Trails held up to its name,” El Reno head coach Lanae Goucher said. “We were in a wind advisory all day with the winds blowing around 45 mph. We were not happy with our scores at all. We are so much better than this and we will play better at state.” Duncan won the regional title with a 339, followed by Altus with a 354. Lawton MacArthur (373), Chickasha (387) and Ardmore (422) grabbed the remaining four state tickets. The state tourney will be held at The Territory in Duncan starting Wednesday, a course in which El Reno shot a 368 team score earlier this season. In the six previous years at state, three under Goucher’s husband, Matt, El Reno has placed no better than fourth — which was at the 2006 championships. “We have a good chance to do better than that this year,” Goucher said. “If we can get everyone to relax and play golf and not put too much pressure on themselves.” Goucher said her team will have to shoot in the range of 330 to have a shot at contending for the title. “I guarantee that each girl can shave 10 strokes off their score from regional,” Goucher said. “That’s 40 strokes and that would put us where we need to be in order to contend. That sounds like a lot of strokes, but I know my girls are capable of shooting in that range and we will expect to do that at state.” But to do that, Goucher said her team will have to play without any cases of the jitters. “Our main goal was to make it to state and we have done that. I hope that now we have made it I can get the girls to finally relax and play 18 holes of golf shot by shot. If we can do that each day, we’ll post our best scores of the season and at the perfect time.” Nerves played into the regional score on the opening nine holes, but each El Reno girl was able to cut an average of three strokes over the closing nine holes to secure the state bid. Madison Haley had nines of 43-41 for a team-low 84, followed by Leilani Gradle’s 47-40 for an 87. Senior Andrea Dyer carded a 99, while Alisha Preno had nines of 52-49 for a 101. Erin Lembke rounded out the EHS effort with a 121.
