Canadian County Sheriff Lewis Hawkins knows exactly how long he has been in office — 19 years and 38 days. After “looking hard at it,” he is looking to extend that time with another four-year term.

“My first official day was Jan. 3, 1989,” he said. “I thought about maybe hanging up my hat but decided to take at least one more run at it.”

Hawkins is a lifelong resident of Canadian County. Both he and his wife, Glenda, graduated from Mustang schools. Hawkins was the senior class president of Mustang High School in 1965.

He said he knew from an early age he would be working in a law-related field and for a time considered becoming a lawyer.

“It sounded all right, but I didn’t want to be yelled at by people,” he said. “Turns out, that’s happened in this job too from time to time.”
