United Way turns down Mobile Meals funding request

El Reno’s Mobile Meals must continue holding its hand out to United Way of Canadian County after that organization turned down its request for $10,000 from this year’s allocations.

In July, UWCC released its list of nonprofits approved for more than $190,000 in funding this year, but Mobile Meals is not included. Director Neta Liebscher said her nonprofit organization was notified it needed further documentation as well as proof of its nonprofit tax status.

“We’re going to get lined out to know what we’re really supposed to do,” she said. Liebscher met with a United Way committee last spring to submit the initial application.

In July, the UW Canadian County board of directors approved $191,477 in funding to 16 nonprofits in the county. The disbursement is more than twice the amount allocated last year.

Telephone calls to United Way of Oklahoma City, the organization that administrates the funding for the county, were not returned. A representative had earlier said the drawback might be because El Reno Mobile Meals has money in the bank.

Mobile Meals of El Reno operates through interests on certificates of deposits, a Mary K. Ashbrook grant, memorials and individual donations. Behests have been placed in certificates of deposit with the interest drawn off for operational expenses.

Officials have said performance and financial data for each agency that re-ceives funding are carefully evaluated before the funding recommendations are made.

Twenty volunteers representing 20 local businesses and organizations reviewed the requests this spring.

Those receiving approval were American Red Cross, Canadian Valley, $26,500; Blessing Baskets, $10,500; Boy Scouts Last Frontier Council, $7,170; Boys and Girls Club of Darlington, $9,270; CAB-CART House, $14,780.

Also, Canadian County CASA, $13,000; Canadian County 4-H, $4,720; Center of Family Love, $17,136; Compassionate Hands-Trans, $1,500; El Reno Community Clinic, $7,000; Russell-Murray Hospice, $13,070.

And Salvation Army-Canadian County Service Unit, $11,570; Women’s Service and Family Resource Center, $18,500; Youth and Family Services Inc., $24,698; Yukon Sharing, $12,063.

The former United Fund of El Reno melded with the United Way of Oklahoma City to become United Way of Canadian County in 2002.
