RCC women sweep MACU, home bills

Redlands Community College women’s basketball team, ranked 17th in the nation, posted its fifth straight win of the young season last week with a 98-44 humbling of Mid-America Christian University.

Redlands, coming off two wins at its own classic, had four players reach double digits in the win over the Evangels. Natasha Richardson popped in a team-high 19 points to go along with seven assists and four steals.

Kim Ford scored a season-high 15 points, followed by Stefanie Cook with 13 points and Leanna Litsch with 11. Litsch took two charges on defense to stop MACU possessions.

Chelsea Yarbrough and Demesha Heard led those in single digits with eight points each, followed by LeNece Glossett with seven and six by Natashia Waugh. Lameka Oakes had six assists, two steals, seven rebounds and four points.

Redlands 69, Grayson County (Texas) 44

Oakes shot 62 percent from the field, including 2-of-3 from the 3-point line, to pace the Cougars to a 25-point win over the Vikings. Cook was close behind with 55 percent shooting, netting 5-of-9 attempts from 3-point range to highlight her 14 points.

Ford hit one trey and rolled in four more baskets to end with 10 points. Heard led those in single digits with nine, while Glossett and Waugh scored eight each. Heard grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, followed by Litsch with four and three each by Oakes and Waugh.

Redlands defense held Grayson to no 3-pointers and 15 total baskets. The Vikings were 14-of-23 from the free throw line. Waugh had three of the Cougars 11 steals, while Heard and Litsch had two each. Oakes, Glossett, Yarbrough and Cook each had a pick.

The Cougars shot 47 percent from the 3-point line in the 47-point blowout, led by Cook’s 3-for-4 effort. Oakes and Yarbrough buried two treys each. Redlands shot 49 percent from the floor for the game and dropped 9-of-14 free throw attempts.

Oakes led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Cook with 13 and 10 each by Yarbrough and Richardson. Heard dropped in nine to go along with eight by Leandra Johnson and six by Waugh.

Redlands grabbed 39 rebounds, led by Johnson’s nine and eight by Glossett. Heard had five caroms.
