Bombers stun EHS wrestlers in battle of superpowersEl Reno High School’s unscathed run in dual matches against teams from Oklahoma was halted Thursday night as Midwest City handed the Indians a stunning 30-22 road defeat. “Midwest City has done a good job of assembling their kids,” El Reno head coach Archie Randall said, whose team slipped to 9-3 overall. “Hopefully we can avenge this loss over the weekend in the Geary tournament.” Midwest City, one of the contenders for the Class 5A state title this season, won eight matches off the Indians — including a sweep through the upper weights. “It was a well-wrestled dual,” Randall said. “When you have two equally talented teams, it becomes a chess match and you need make moves to get the match ups you need in order to win. We did not get those matches.” The Bombers won two of three lightweight matches, with Willie Gunter edging out Austin Mogg 8-7 at 103 pounds. Tyler Untrauer followed with a 12-3 major decision over Chris Crawford at 112 pounds. Derek Gibbs avoided a sweep of the light weights with a 4-1 decision over Midwest City’s Seth Johnson at 119 pounds. Gibbs’ win kicked off a string of three victories for El Reno. Brian Shelton dominated Lance Ledesma at 125 pounds to the tune of a 16-1 technical fall. Adam Delong them added a 9-5 decision over Chris Hill at 130 pounds. Midwest City countered with two wins as Mark Mayer beat Travis Lord 5-3 at 135 pounds and Tony Mahan scored a 12-4 major decision at 140 pounds over Crad Cradduck – who returned to the lineup after suffering a separated shoulder. El Reno owned the middle weights, taking three of the four matches. Kevin Frazier was a 6-4 winner over Grant Young at 145 pounds, followed by Chris Hacker’s 9-3 major decision over Kenneth King at 152 pounds. ‘We didn’t get nay bonus points out of those two weights,” Randall said. The Bombers stopped the run at 160 pounds as Andrew Thigpen dismantled Mitch McKee by a 26-8 technical fall. El Reno countered with Jeff James 17-2 technical fall over Rob Wood at 171 pounds. Midwest City picked up 12 points from the heavyweight trio of Nick Kretzchmar, Nick Hill and Matthew Welch. Kretzchmar won a 3-0 decision over Derek Thompson at 189 pounds, while Hill pinned Ryan Marshall with 30 seconds left in the third period. Welch picked up three team points with a 5-1 victory over Jonathan Dutcher. "That was the difference in the dual right there," Randall said. “We wanted to have Derek on Hill, because he would have beaten him. But we didn’t get that match up and Derek got Kretzchmar.” Midwest City is the only Class 5A team, other than Ponca City, to gain a dual win over El Reno. The Wildcats defeated the Indians in 2003 and 2004, before El Reno posted an undefeated season a year ago – including a revenge win over PCHS. |
