The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes will dedicate a veterans memorial monument Saturday in Concho.
The monument lists more than 800 names of American Indian veterans and took more than a year of planning and design. James Hawk Sr., now dead, recruited friends and other veterans to see through plans and construction.
The dedication service will begin with a continental breakfast from 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. Cheyenne and Arapaho priests will bless the memorial at 9 a.m., followed by the raising of flags at the memorial flagpole and singing of the tribe’s flag and memorial songs.
At 9:30 a.m., all warriors and veterans are invited for a march starting in the community center parking lot and walking to the memorial site. The Prairie Band Pottawatomie Color Guard will lead the procession.
Tribe Gov. Darrell Flyingman will present a welcome address at 10 a.m. followed by three guest speakers — Ted Underwood, a service officer of the Chickasaw Nation, Jim Darnall, Legion Post 410 commander of Mayetta, Kan., and Tom Holm of Tucson, Ariz.
The tribes will honor families of service members killed in action at 11 a.m.
The audience will then sing Cheyenne and Arapaho hymns followed by the American Indian church song.
After lunch at noon in the community center, veterans will gather for the traditional veterans honor dance from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
