Calumet basketball girls vanquished in final seconds

After an undefeated run through their first nine conference games, the Calumet girls squad suffered a 51-50 loss to Lookeba-Sickles Friday.

“It really would have meant everything to us to have been undefeated in conference. Before, everyone knew we were going to go far, and losing like this raises a lot of questions,” said Hannah Weldon, the team’s leading scorer.

Calumet opened with a 17-point first quarter, and held a 26-21 lead at the half.

The Chieftains led the game by as many as 12 points in the second half, but were outscored 21-10 in the final period.

With a 50-49 lead in the game’s final seconds, the Chieftains lost the ball on a five-second call. Lookeba-Sickles inbounded the ball and scored to take the lead and a last-second shot by the Chieftains was fruitless.

Weldon scored 18 points in the contest, followed by Kelly Morris with 10.

Ashley Haydon, the team’s leading scorer in two of their previous four games, picked up nine points.

“I just decided I needed to make some improvements and step up. It’s easier for our team to score with Hannah back, but someone is going to have to step up and help out in Meghan Renbarger’s spot,” Haydon said.

“If I can step up and do what she did, the other players on the team will step up as well.”
Rachael Spears tossed in eight points and senior Stevie Stewart hit three.

Heather Davidson rounded out the scorers with two points.
