Feb. 9 and Feb. 10: 'Buffalo Soldier'Feb 9 2008 - 2:23pm Feb 10 2008 - 2:23am A full-length musical, “Buffalo Soldier,” will be staged Feb. 9 and 10 at Fort Reno's chapel. Saturday's show starts at 7 p.m. and Sunday's at 2 p.m. The musical by Janis Contway, author of dozens of plays, musicals., and films, was inspired by the true story of Katherine Holmes, a freed slave, employed as a maid in the commander’s home at Fort Reno during the late nineteenth century. Katherine sings the hauntingly beautiful music of slavery as she saves for a farm where she will be both free and independent. Her plans are interrupted when she meets Benjamin Johnson, a Buffalo Soldier. When Benjamin is transferred to build forts and fight Indians in the Southwest, they exchange letters, and in poetry, and song, they fall in love. The play stars Robin Michele Taylor as Katherine, Kelvin Carrington as Benjamin and features Marlon Thompson as the Reverend. Robin Taylor, a student of Musical Performance at Oklahoma Christian University, has performed in productions throughout the United States and represented Oklahoma City as a member of “Team Sheldon” in the national Television series, “Battle of the Choirs.” Kelvin Carrington is a well known actor appearing in plays, movies, and commercials throughout the Southwest. Making his theatrical debut, Marlon Thompson writes and performs rap music on various online sites.
