El Reno wrestlers stunned at dual state

TULSA — In 13 trips to the Class 4A Dual State Championship, El Reno High School head wrestling coach Archie Randall guided his Indians to a record-setting 10 straight gold trophies.

However, Randall’s farewell run through the 2006 Dual State Championships ended Saturday night the way it began over a decade ago — with a disheartening loss.

“It was disappointing to the coaches and the wrestlers,” Randall said.

“Anytime you are striving to be a state champion, you have got to compete. You have to leave everything out there on the mat, and there were instances in which we did not do that.”

El Reno’s unprecedented rule atop the 4A ranks came crashing down with a 39-27 loss to Catoosa.

It was the first time since the 1995 finals for a Randall-coached team to lose a match at dual state.

Catoosa’s shocking win ended a string of 32 straight victories at the tourney for El Reno, which ended the Randall era with a 34-3 overall record.

Altus and Tulsa Webster are the only other teams to beat EHS on the state level.

“I did not think we would lose this year,” Randall said.

“I still think we have the better team. But we did not do the things we normally do in order to win. We lost a couple of key matches and we gave up some falls — those are the things we haven’t done in the past.”

El Reno won only five matches in the championship dual, falling behind early on a 1-0 loss by Derek Gibbs to Catoosa 119-pounder Shawn Thomas.

Senior Brian Shelton got the Tribe on track with a 16-1 technical fall over Montana Carson at 125 pounds.

Shelton had a trio of near falls in the win and allowed one escape point late in the third period.

However, the lead would not hold as Catoosa won the next three weights. Adam Delong lost a 14-3 decision to Justin Suskey, five of those points coming on a third period takedown and near fall.

“I think Adam was trying too hard to get us back in the match. He was trying things that was out of his norm,” Randall said.

Chad Cradduck (135) had a 5-4 lead when he was caught on his back and pinned by Dallas Bailey with 28 seconds left in the match.

Travis Lord was rolled into a pin with only eight seconds left in his 140-pound match.

Down 19-5, Kevin Frazier scored four takedowns in the third period to highlight his 12-4 major decision over Corey Conley.

Chris Hacker scored a reverse in the third period of his 152-pound match with Randy White to force overtime.

Hacker followed with a takedown 11 seconds into the extra period to post a 4-2 win to pull the Indians back to within 19-12.

Catoosa got three of those points back on an 8-4 win over Mitch McKee at 160 pounds.

El Reno senior Jeff James got the first of two victories by picking apart Derek Metcalf with three takedowns and a near fall before posting a fall at the 1:39 mark.

Derek Thompson rode a first-period takedown and a reversal in the second period to a 4-1 win over J.C. Meeker at 189 pounds.

That win closed the gap to 27-21, but it was the last win for EHS on the mat.

Ryan Marshall (215) lost a 15-0 technical fall, while heavyweight Jonathan Dutcher and 103-pounder Austin Mogg were both pinned.

Chris Crawford picked up a forfeit at 112 pounds.

El Reno will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Class 4A West Regional Tournament held at Jenks Simmons Field House.

Winners will advance to the state tournament Feb. 24-25 at the state fairgrounds.
