Raney makes state in shot putCHOCTAW — El Reno High School sophomore C.J. Raney will be headed to Tulsa this weekend for the state championships, despite a fourth-place finish Monday at the Class 5A West Region II Track and Field Championships. Raney, who won the Suburban Conference tournament at Western Heights two weeks ago with a throw of 51-1 — qualified for the 5A state meet, being held at East Central High School. He did so by having the longest throw in the shot put not to have garnered a top three finish at one of the four regional meets statewide. After the top 12 throwers were determined, Raney was awarded the first of four “additional qualifier” tickets. His longest throw in Monday’s meet, which was postponed from Saturday due to rain, was 48-9 1/2. Southeast High School’s Gerald McCoy won the regional with a toss of 54-2. Guthrie Blue Jays’ Jona-than Washington threw 49-8 1/2 — just edging out Woodward’s Ryan Barby’s throw of 49-8. Raney enters the state meet with the sixth longest throw from all the regional meets. He sits behind the three from the Choctaw regional as well as Ardmore’s Goeffrey Tabor (57-11) and Durant’s Ryan Hisaw (51-2). Dameko Brewer, Lawton MacArthur, Jared Lene, Altus, and Jamel Walker from Coweta also earned “additional qualifier” bids. El Reno’s Jon Erbar also took part in the shot put, but did not make state. |
