Wedman, Piersall draw tough seeds at state tennis tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY — El Reno High School tennis players Taylor Wedman and Cody Piersall ran into rough waters right off the bat Friday, drawing two high seeds at the 2006 Class 4A Boys State Tennis Championships.
Wedman was paired up against third-seeded Sean Cobble of Duncan at No. 1 singles, dropping the match by scores of 1-6/1-6.
“He was probably the best I have played this year,” Wedman said.
“I wasn’t expecting to beat him, so I just went in there and tried to do my best and compete.”
Wedman said Cobble’s serve ended up doing him in.
“Returning his serves gave me trouble,” Wedman said. “They were insanely fast and I only returned two of them. That was the hardest part of playing him.”
Wedman stayed alive in the tournament on Friday afternoon, beating Altus sophomore Shaun Hanks by duplicate 6-2 scores. Wedman said he felt little pressure in the match, even though it was an elimination match.
“I had beaten him before, so I knew that if I played my game that I could do it again,” Wedman said. “So there was not a lot of pressure.”
Wedman was slated to play Tulsa Bishop Kelley’s Payton Fesperman on Saturday in another elimination match. If he survived that round, he would play a guaranteed two more matches, finishing no lower than eighth and as high as fifth place.
The sophomore reached the same point last year, but exited in that elimination match.
“I would like to go a little further this year,” Wedman said. “That would be a nice thing to do.”
Piersall, playing No. 2 singles, opened the tournament with a 1-6/3-6 loss to Claremore’s Ross Clark.
