El Reno wrestlers medal with Team Oklahoma

Cory Dauphin and Hanah Martin aided the state’s title-winning team last week.

Etta Dale Junior High School wrestling coach Jay Howard serves as a coach for the team, which wrestled its way to a team championship at the Schoolboy National Duals in Indianapolis Wednesday through Sunday.

Martin was 5-2 at 80 pounds in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, and Dauphin — wrestling at 130 pounds — was an undefeated 9-0.

“He made the all-tournament team. Okahoma had never won the Schoolboy Nationals,” new EHS head coach Bobby Miller said.

“The team from Pennsylvania always wins this tournament. This time, we knocked off Pennsylvania 40-39. It came down to the final match, and it had all the drama you could ask for.”

Miller said he was proud of both wrestlers, and impressed by Dauphin’s undefeated run.

“Anytime you have a kid go undefeated against some of the best wrestlers across the country, it’s a good weekend. I’d never tell a kid who went 8-1 that they had a bad weekend. It’d be tough, and we’d want to work on whatever cost them that one match, but that is a great weekend,” he said.

Matt White, a Woodward product who trains with El Reno and wrestles at 100 pounds, also competed in Indianapolis, bringing home a 7-2 record.

Miller said the rest of the summer, filled with a number of events for the Cadet and Junior squads, is expected to be just as successful for El Reno wrestlers.

“We’re going to Carlsbad to wrestle in the Kids and Cadets Southern Plains Regional Friday and Saturday. If you place in the top three in this tournament at the Cadet level, you qualify for the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D,. in the last week of July,” he said.

“The Schoolboys have really set the stage for Team Oklahoma. Our Cadets are highly touted and highly thought of.”

The four wrestlers Miller is taking to Carlsbad from El Reno have already qualified for the Cadet National Duals in Kansas City June 22-26.

They include Austin Mogg, wrestling at 98 pounds, Derek Thompson at 171 pounds, Cody Dauphin at heavyweight and Zach White — another Woodward resident wrestling in El Reno — at 160 pounds.

Miller said he intended to continue the program of aggressive summer wrestling former head coach Archie Randall instituted.

“I have been involved in freestyle in the summer for a long time, and I know how important it is to prepare for the winter. I plan to keep on with it,” he said.

Next week, Miller will work with Team Oklahoma’s Junior level squad at Oklahoma City University.

Josh Grube will wrestle at 112 pounds and Adam Delong will wrestle at 119.

Chris Hacker, at 152 pounds, and Jeff James, at 171 pounds and competing in his final year, will round out the El Reno contingent.

“The thing about the summer is that it doesn’t just make you better for the winter. All of the national exposure gives you opportunities for scholarships. Get in the top eight at nationals, and you’re going to see some money for college if that’s what you want. That’s what we’re all about, helping these kids make it to college,” he said.

Miller said the transition to a new head coach has been as smooth as possible, thanks in large part to Howard, the only remaining member of the staff.

“There are some techniques I’d like to see them improve on, and I am going to want them to be very aggressive. Not that they weren’t before, but that’s my style, and that’s what I’ll work with them on. There is always a transition time, but it’s been very smooth. Jay Howard has done a wonderful job helping everyone make the transition,” Miller said.

“I’m excited about the school year.”
