Still undefeated: Redlands men continue to make case for nation’s top ranking

By Glen Miller/Staff Writer MIAMI — Carderro Nwoji hit a basket with 12 seconds to play Thursday night that secured an 83-80 comeback win for the Redlands Community College men’s basketball team against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Redlands, ranked second in the nation among NJCAA Division I schools, improved to 17-0 on the season and 7-0 in the Bi-State Conference. It was the Cougars third win since returning from the holiday break. Steve Eck’s team took an early 11-2 on the Golden Norsemen before falling on hard times and found itself trailing 42-31 at the half. Redlands fought back to take a six-point advantage late in the game and held off NEO for the win at the free throw line. Nwoji hit two free throws in the stretch run. Rodney Alexander led all RCC scorers with 19 points, followed by Chris Cooks with 18. Albert Fisher buried two 3-pointers to highlight his 10 points, followed by Nwoji with a 3-pointer and nine total – along with Charles Bronson. Tyree Scott chipped in seven to the winning mix, followed by five from Chris Rhymes, four points from Eric McKinney and two from Reggie Cook. Other Redlands wins after the break were against Bi-State teams, including an 81-64 road decision over defending national champion University of Arkansas Fort Smith – to complete the regular season sweep. The Cougars led UAFS by a 24-5 count, but allowed the champs to close the gap to 36-30 by halftime. Eck’s team would put the game away early in the second half with a 22-4 run. Cooks led all scorers with 16 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Alexander added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Bronson cornered six boards to go along with 14 points, while Rhymes had 13 points and Nwoji 10 points and six boards. Fisher led those in single digits with five points to go along with four assists. Redlands opened up 2007 with an 89-50 drubbing of Eastern Oklahoma State College, with five players reaching double digits. Cooks led the quintet with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Scott and Nwoji added 13 points each, followed by Bronson and Rhymes with 12 apiece. DeMarco Stanfield paced the single-digit scorers with six points, while Cook added five and four each by Fisher and Preston Brown – who had six points. Fisher led the Cougars in assists with eight.
