Cougar men drain eight treys in Shorter rout

Making a strong statement to take the top slot in the NJCAA Division I poll after the new year, Redlands Community College men’s basketball team capped off a 14-0 run through the first half of the season last week with a 114-43 win over Shorter College. Redlands, which moved up to No. 2 in the last poll before the holidays, used the 3-point basket to beat Shorter — which was a Division I school until going independent this season. The Cougars swished eight baskets from beyond the arc from five different shooters. “Some games we will have one or two 3-pointers, and then there are games we will have eight or more,” Redlands coach Steve Eck said. “At least our percentage is getting better than it was.” Rodney Alexander dropped in two 3-pointers to highlight his 16 points. Chris Cooks matched that point total without hitting a trey. Reggie Cook and Carderro Nwoji each hit a basket from long range and closed with 15 points apiece. Albert Fisher dialed up two long distance basket and ended the game with 14 points. Tyree Scott hit a pair of treys to round out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Rod Green led those players in single digits with eight and Preston Brown added six. Redlands was coming off a 90-58 win over Arkansas Baptist that gave the Cougars a sweep of the Region II foe. Eck’s team led 40-23 at the break before going on a 50-35 run over the final 20 minutes. Cooks led five players in double digits with 18 points, followed by Alexander and Chris Rhymes with 14 points each and 11 from Nwoji. Charles Bronson was 4-of-6 from the field to highlight his 10 points. Scott paced the single-digit shooters with eight points. Cook and Eric McKinney had four each. Cooks completed a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds, while Alexander had seven and Rhymes six.
