Women's shooting blitz holds off Buffs
The Redlands Community College women’s basketball team added a little spice into their final game of 2006, holding off a late second-half rally by Arkansas Baptist to beat the Buffaloes 81-56.
The 25-point win lifted the Cougars to 11-1 heading into the holiday break. Redlands, which remained 10th this week in the NJCAA Division II poll, defeated Texas-based Mountain View College a day earlier by a 92-49 margin.
Against Arkansas Baptist, Redlands held a 38-26 lead at intermission and increased that margin to 50-35 with 16:20 left in the second half. However, the Cougars shooting would go stone cold over the next five minutes as the team committed six turnovers.
The scoreless drought allowed the Buffaloes to close the gap to 50-47 with 10:55 to play.
Redlands finally ended its skid on a turnaround jumper by Lameka Oakes with 10:11 left in the game — a 6:09 drought without a point. Demesha Beard added a free throw before Kim Ford buried a 3-pointer with 8:42 to play to increase the lead to 55-49.
Arkansas Baptist trimmed the lead back to 55-51 before Ford completed a conven- tional 3-pointer with 7:09 to play. Redlands lead remained in single digits until Heard hit a running jumper that sparked a flurry of baskets over the final 6:20 of the game.
Redlands hit 8-of-9 attempts from inside the arc over that stretch, with Oakes rolling in five and a free throw. Chelsea Yarbrough and Heard added another basket as Redlands pushed the winning margin back into double digits.
The Cougars were perfect from the free throw line over the final 6:20, with Natasha Waugh hitting four, Heard with two and one by Oakes.
Arkansas Baptist was stunned by the blitz, hitting only 2-of-10 shots over the same period, while committing six turnovers.
Oakes ended the game with 21 points and completed a double-double by grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. Waugh scored 20 points and cornered four rebounds, while Heard had 14 points, on 5-of-11 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds.
Ford led those in single digits with eight points, followed by Leandra Johnson with seven points and Yarbrough with five. Stefanie Cook added three points to the winning mix.
Redlands defense forced 12 steals in the blowout, with Heard having four and Oakes with two.
Texans demise
Redlands hammered Mt. View College behind a 14-point effort from Oakes on 4-of-7 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Heard dropped in 12 points, followed by Yarbrough and Waugh with 10 each.
Glossett rolled in four baskets from 2-point range to close with nine points along with Johnson. Leanna Litsch had eight points followed by Cook and Yager with seven each and six by Ford.
