Redlands cagers set to defend rankings

By Glen Miller/Staff Writer The Redlands Community College basketball teams will open up the second half of the season as marked squads as both hold down top 10 rankings in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association polls. Steve Eck’s men’s team returns to action Monday with a home game against Eastern Oklahoma State College. The Cougars are undefeated at 14-0 and hold down the No.2 spot nationally in the Division I poll, trailing only undefeated Chipola College out of Mari-anna, Fla. Redlands is one of seven teams in the top 20, four of those in the top five, to hold an undefeated record. Monday’s game with the Vikings kicks off a string of 16 games for the Cougars against NJCAA Region II schools, with the results of those games used to cap off the seedings for the postseason tournament. The Cougars are 6-0 against Region II squads at the break, but will have to face defending national champion University of Arkansas Fort Smith on its home court Jan. 11. Redlands defeated UAFS at home. Redlands has three players averaging in double digits at the break, led by Rodney Alexander’s 15.1 average. Chris Rhymes is close behind with a 14.6 average, while Chris Cooks is averaging just over 12 points per outing. The Cougars have two more players pushing double figures, with Carderro Nwoji averaging 9.6 points and Charles Bronson just over eight points. The Redlands women’s team will be on the road to begin the second half of the season, tipping off in the Louisiana-Eunice on Friday. The Cougars will remain in the Big Easy to face Delgado Community College on Monday and Tuesday. Laci Tompkins’ team is 10-1 at the break and holds down the 10th spot in the NJCAA Division II poll. Similar to the men’s team, Redlands has three players averaging in double digits at the break — led by Lameka Oakes’ 144 points or 13.0 per outing. Natasha Richardson has scored 117 points in 10 games for an 11.7 average, while Demesha Heard is close behind with 127 points or an 11.5 average. LeNece Glossett and Natasha Waugh are averaging just over eight points per game each and lead a group of nine players in single digit averages. Heard is the team’s top rebounder with 49, followed by Waugh’s 42 and 39 from Oakes.
