ER netters sting 'Jackets![]()
By Byron Beers/Staff Writer Playing to near perfection, the El Reno girls and boys tennis squads had no problems getting past Kingfisher Thursday afternoon at Legion Park. The boys swept the Yellowjackets in all matches, while the only falter on the girls side was in No. 1 doubles. Taylor Wedman blanked Ian Shutler 6-0/6-0 in No.1 singles to stay perfect on the season, while Cody Peirsall defeated Ben McKay in No. 2 singles with 6-0/6-0 victories. In doubles action, Ben Mauldin and Gary Elledge teamed up to defeat Chris Bare and Kevin Boeckman, 6-4/6-1.
Lewis remains unbeaten on the season. The only drawback was in girls doubles where Cera Perez and Molly Siegrist were defeated in straight sets by Kayla Crawford and Brook Scammahorn, 7-5/6-1. “Maureen and Taylor have both been outstanding,” El Reno head coach Mike Booher said. “They continue to go undefeated for the season. “Next week should be a good test for both of them with the conference tournaments on Wednesday and Weatherford tournament on Friday.” The Indians will claim their spots at the Suburban Conference tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Wednesday. They then travel to Weatherford for a second straight tournament two days later. Both squads were also strong in a dual match against Southwest Covenant on Wednesday. Wedman took care of Chris Garner, 6-1/6-1 in No.1 singles, and Piersall posted 6-4 and 6-2 wins over Keith McKee in No. 2 singles. The Indians also had a clean sweep in doubles as Elledge and Mauldin combined to defeat Ryan Wood and Jake Brown in No.1 doubles, 6-3/6-2, while Dillon Young and Eric Palmer won 8-6 in a pro set. Lewis and Wills each picked up victories in singles action. Lewis defeated Caroline Tait, 6-2/6-0, and Wills got past Katy Langston, 6-2/6-1. Perez and Siegrist were handed a 2-8 setback in a pro set match to Livingston and Tait in No.1 doubles. On Monday against Yukon, Lewis and Wedman both won their matches in No.1 singles action. Lewis shut down Kim Wiedman in straight sets, 6-0/6-0. Wedman held off Gage Glasgow 7-6 in the first set, before taking command in the next set with a 6-2 win. Wills and Piersall each suffered losses in No.2 singles. Wills dropped straight sets to Katy Scibilia, 6-2/7-5, and Piersall lost to David Delgado, 7-5/6-2. Perez and Siegrist were shut out by Kaitlyn Corr and Jessica Vaughn, 6-0/6-0 in No.1 doubles. Young and Mauldin suffered a setback in No.1 doubles on the boys side, 6-0/6-1, while Elledge and Palmer claimed victory in three sets in No.2 doubles, 6-1/3-6/6-4. |
