Lewis marches on to state

El Reno junior tennis player Maureen Lewis found her way back to the Class 4A state tournament for a third straight year.

Lewis finished in second place in No.1 singles Monday during 4A Region II action in Duncan.

She dropped her only match in the finals to Melanie Barnes of Duncan (2-6/1-6). Lewis started the tournament by earning a bye in the first round. She then bounced Ashley Rodgers of Harrah in a clean sweep, 6-0/6-0.

“I’m real excited for Maureen,” El Reno head coach Mike Booher said. “She has a good opportunity to do well at state.

“She has practiced hard all year and it has shown. She has the ability to play well against anyone in the state.”

Lewis improved her overall record on the season to 13-2. Lewis will be in action at the state tournament beginning Friday at the OKC Tennis Center. The tournament is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.

In No.2 singles, Jessica Wills fell in her two matches. Wills was defeated by Ardmore’s Jordan Hunter (0-6/0-6) in the opening round. She then lost to Miranda Peters in the losers bracket, 2-6/4-6. Wills placed seventh at regionals and closes the year with a record of 4-10.

The combination of Cera Perez and Molly Siegrist went 1-3 in No. 1 doubles play.

Perez and Siegrist dropped their opening-round match to Car/Lovett to begin play. The duo then responded to defeat Garcia/Corder of Capitol Hill in a losers bracket match. Perez and Siegrist then lost their final two matches to Lawton MacArthur’s Cappel/-Cappel, and Macom/Warren of Harrah to finish in sixth place.

“Jessica, Cera and Molly played the best tennis they have played all year at regionals,” Booher said. “They played hard and gave a lot of effort.

“Cera and Molly are freshmen that have had to play No. 1 doubles against older and more experienced players all year. They gained confidence and their play has improved greatly from the start of the year.”
