El Reno gets big win at Deer Creek
By Byron Beers/Staff Writer
El Reno didn’t get the end result it wanted in a three-game stretch last week during tournament play at Deer Creek High School, but the Indians made the best of their one victory.
The Tribe lost games to Cleveland and Miami, but their one win came over Class 4A, second-ranked Oologah on Friday.
Senior starting pitcher Trendon Johnson tossed a complete game and helped lift El Reno to a 13-8 win.
In seven innings, Johnson allowed eight runs, but only three of the runs were earned. He gave up eight hits, recorded three strikeouts and did not issue a walk. The right-hander improved to 3-2 on the season. In 25 innings of work, Johnson has a 5.32 earned run average with 16 strikeouts.
The offense was potent in supporting Johnson. The Indians collected 14 hits and were led by the likes of Jarrod Cole, Jay Weekley, Dillon Deitrick, Hunter Epperson and Johnson himself.
Cole, Weekley, Deitrick and Epperson each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Johnson finished with two hits in four trips with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cole, Weekley and Deitrick both knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice, and Epperson had one run batted in and a run scored.
El Reno had its biggest output during the fourth inning where it scored four runs on the strength of three doubles. Cole drove in one run with a double, while Johnson and Weekley each knocked in two runs with doubles.
The Indians couldn’t build off the victory over the Mustangs in their second game Friday against Miami as they dropped a 13-1 decision.
Senior Chandon Vieweg was responsible for El Reno’s lone run as he brought in Johnson with an RBI double to right-center field in the opening frame. Johnson reached on a single and stole second base.
The Wardogs did most of their damage in the first inning by scoring seven runs on five hits off Cole. The Indians also committed two errors in the first.
Vieweg led the way offensively by going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a double.
El Reno started the tournament with a 9-1 setback to Cleveland on Wednesday where it was limited to just three hits.
Epperson, Johnson and Daulton Repp had the only hits. Johnson drove in the only run during the first inning when he doubled to left-center and scored Cole.
Junior starting pitcher Caleb Koos was handed the loss. Koos allowed five earned runs on 13 hits in four innings of duty. He struck out four and did not issue a free pass.
Reliever Michael Costin pitched a scoreless fifth where he gave up one hit and had one strikeout.
