El Reno grapplers looking for return to glory

By Byron Beers/Staff Writer For first-year El Reno wrestling coach Bobby Miller, it’s that time of the year where everything else is put aside. Miller has been busy preparing the Indians for the Class 4A dual state tournament where he will attempt to get them back to the top. El Reno, currently ranked second in 4A in the team dual rankings and third in the team tournament rankings, will begin the eight-team tournament at 8 p.m. Friday at Midwest City High School. The Indians are currently 9-2 in dual competition this season. They earned the top seed from the West after clinching the Suburban Conference title. They will open competition against the fourth seed from the East, Coweta. With a win, El Reno would square off against the winner of Shawnee and Chickasha at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oklahoma City University. Former head coach Archie Randall put El Reno on the wrestling landscape with 10 straight dual state champion-ships and 11 straight team state titles. The Indians failed to reach the pinnacle last year in Randall’s final year as coach at the dual state tournament after falling to Catoosa. Randall is now leading the wrestling program at Oklahoma City University. It will now be Miller’s opportunity to return them to the top and he’s confident his squad can get there. And Miller has been in this position before in previous coaching stops, including Midwest City, a perennial power in Class 5A. Despite a long layoff where El Reno had duals against Western Heights and Ponca City canceled due to inclement weather, Miller has liked his squad’s preparations in recent practices, most notably on Monday. “Yesterday we had a fantastic practice,” Miller said Tuesday afternoon. “It was probably one of the best ones we’ve had in weeks. This season has been crazy with the snow and ice — we’ve been in and out, but yesterday I felt we had a championship-type practice. “Not that today’s was bad, but sometimes when they are fantastic, it’s hard to follow with another one on the very next day. “If we go out and compete like we did yesterday in practice, we will be tough to beat.” Miller likes where the Indians are set up in the bracket with Catoosa and Noble being on the same side. Catoosa is ranked No.1 in both polls, while Noble is second in the tournament team rankings and third in the dual rankings. But Miller knows Coweta comes first and that it has some quality wrestlers. “Coweta has three or four guys that are pretty good,” Miller said. “If we take care of business, we will wrestle against either Shawnee or Chickasha, although we can’t look past Coweta.” “I thought Shawnee looked awfully good at the Suburban Conference duals,” Miller added. “They wrestled for third place and just beat Carl Albert senseless so that’s kind of what made me favor Shawnee. “But I look at Chickasha and they’ve won a tournament and placed high in a couple of others so they’ve got some guys in there who are going to place.” The Indians will lean on seniors Chris Hacker, Adam DeLong and Josh Grube. The trio has competed on the big stage, whereas it will be a new experience for freshmen such as Hannah Martin, Colton Gallo, Cory Dauphin and Cody Dauphin. But this group of freshmen has been solid all season long for the Indians. Cory Dauphin and Cody Dauphin are coming off individual titles recently at the Junior High State Championships. Gallo was a runner-up and Martin finished sixth. Hacker is the only unbeaten member of the squad. The University of Nebraska signee is 29-0 and has won four tournament championships. DeLong will go in with a 22-3 record and has conquered a pair of tournament titles at Tulsa Union and Putnam City North. Cody Dauphin is 23-7 in his first year with the varsity, while Cory Dauphin is 29-6.
